Senior/Staff Software Engineer – Interactive Experiences

Location: Remote - USA and Canada

Employment Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $180,000–$250,000 USD/year

Experience: 7+ years

Visa Sponsorship: Not available

About the Company

Our client is a Series C education technology company helping hundreds of thousands of paid subscribers learn through interactive experiences.

The company is building a graphical AI tutor: a learning environment where students and AI can see and manipulate the same visual elements to explore concepts, solve problems, and develop a deeper understanding of math and programming.

You’ll join a small, highly experienced engineering team that includes former founders and engineering leaders, with a strong emphasis on ownership, thoughtful product development, and AI-enabled engineering.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Senior/Staff Software Engineer to build the interactive components powering the company’s learning experiences.

These components work like reusable building blocks, allowing learning designers, AI content agents, and the tutor itself to create and extend lessons. Each component exposes an API, and every supported configuration must produce a correct, solvable, and meaningful exercise.

This is a rendering-intensive engineering role, with challenges closer to a game engine than a conventional web application. Most development happens in Elm, with significant use of TypeScript.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build engaging, reusable interactive components that help learners master foundational concepts.
  • Design clear, expressive APIs used by learning designers, AI content agents, and the AI tutor.
  • Ensure supported component configurations produce valid and solvable learning experiences.
  • Own implementation from concept to launch, collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Content.
  • Solve complex browser rendering and web performance challenges.
  • Write simple, robust, readable code that teammates and AI tools can understand and extend.
  • Integrate AI tools intentionally into development workflows.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience focused on the web.
  • Deep experience with complex web rendering and performance, including browser APIs and Canvas.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently build interactive web experiences, supported by projects such as games, animations, visual explainers, or rendering experiments.
  • Strong understanding of the web as a platform, beyond standard UI development.
  • Ability to explain technical decisions alongside their impact on users and the business.
  • Consistent, intentional use of AI development tools and a clear perspective on effective AI-enabled engineering.
  • Ability to collaborate in real time with a cross-functional team.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in game development, animation, or interactive media.
  • Familiarity with Elm, Haskell, or other functional programming languages, or a strong interest in learning.
  • Experience building collaborative whiteboards, virtual workspaces, design tools, or other Canvas-intensive products.
  • Background in education, teaching, or tools for educators.
  • Startup or founding experience in a small team with substantial ownership.

Benefits

  • Equity, with a transparent compensation framework.
  • 100% coverage of medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees.
  • Flexible PTO, with a team norm of approximately six weeks off annually, including public holidays.
  • Home office equipment.
  • Professional development stipend.

Interview Process

  • Introductory conversation with the hiring manager.
  • Paid take-home assignment.
  • Optional additional conversation before the final round.
  • Virtual onsite interviews.
  • Offer.
